Original Medicare
The federal program’s hospital and medical coverage: Parts A and B.
What does it help cover?
Part A helps cover inpatient hospital stays and certain other care. Part B helps cover doctor services, outpatient care, and many preventive services.
Which doctors can I see?
You can use any doctor or hospital in the United States that accepts Medicare. You usually do not need a specialist referral.
What do I pay?
You pay the Part B premium. Deductibles and other costs apply. For many Part B services, you typically pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount after meeting the deductible.
Medigap or other supplemental coverage may help with your share.
What can I add?
- Medicare Supplement (Medigap) can help pay certain out-of-pocket costs.
- A separate Part D plan can help cover prescriptions. Original Medicare does not cover most prescription drugs you take at home.
What should I check?
Ask whether your providers accept Medicare and assignment. Review drug coverage and your potential costs before deciding.
